Louise Cullen: Forest, Gumboots and Boardrooms
Louise Cullen’s journey spans science, community, and governance. After completing her PhD on beech forests and climate change, she began her governance pathway with local boards and fundraising before stepping up to the Tautua Board nine years ago.
Initially challenged by imposter syndrome, Louise found her turning point through the Agri-Industry Programme, learning to focus on her strengths, silence self-doubt, and thrive with the support of a strong network of women leaders.
Governance Lessons:
Embrace ambiguity: Decisions often outlast board members—robust processes and stakeholder listening are key.
Board culture matters: Harmony, trust in the CEO, and clear strategy drive effective outcomes.
Engaged, not entangled: Listen openly, share only what’s essential, and ask: WAIT—Why Am I Talking?
Final Insights:
Leadership grows from deep roots—mentoring, supporting, and guiding others. Governance is collective, purpose-driven, and best pursued in spaces that energise and inspire.
